FUNK 2025: A CELEBRATION OF YOUTH, CREATIVITY AND COLLABORATION

Now in its 26th year, FUNK continues to be one of the most exciting and inspiring events on the school arts calendar. FUNK 2025 once again proved why this non-competitive dance showcase is so treasured—not only for the electrifying performances, but for the camaraderie, innovation, and sheer joy it brings to the stage.

This year’s production brought together schools from across the KZN Midlands in an explosion of movement, sound, and storytelling. Each six-minute piece offered a unique interpretation of the theme, showing how dance can be used to explore ideas, emotions, and narratives in powerful ways.

Epworth delivered a standout performance, dazzling with their exceptional choreography, polished dance technique, and thoughtful use of costumes and imagery. Their piece was visually rich, emotionally resonant, and beautifully aligned with the theme. The integration of music and movement was seamless, creating a memorable and deeply artistic performance.

St Anne’s brought creative flair and emotional intelligence to the stage through their innovative use of balloons as props, delivering a performance that was as playful as it was profound. Their interpretation of the theme was thoughtful and layered, using the balloons not only for visual impact but as symbols within a broader narrative. It was a unique and memorable piece, playfully dressed but packed with meaning.

A special mention must also go to Michaelhouse, whose use of physical theatre was dazzling, compelling and imaginative. Their ability to engage the audience through bold, confident movement and striking stage presence was truly impressive. Their performance reminded us how movement, even without words, can speak volumes.

Girls’ High made a strong impact with a striking infusion of drama into their dance performance, delivering a poignant and socially conscious reflection on the fate of today’s youth. Their piece tackled the reality of young people who, despite their qualifications, face unemployment—a message that resonated powerfully with the audience.

I feel bad not mentioning all the schools by name, in fact, because it was clear to me that every troupe put in a lot of hard work and, though I am no dance aficionado, the standards seemed pretty high on the whole. Encouraging signs for dance in our region. All schools brought something meaningful and exciting to the stage. The energy, discipline, and originality on display were a credit to every dancer, choreographer, and teacher involved.

It’s heartening to see dance—an artform that is sometimes overshadowed by theatre and music—take centre stage with such pride and prominence. FUNK 2025 reaffirmed that dance is very much alive in the KZN Midlands, with our schools nurturing not just performers, but passionate, creative young artists.

Bravo to all involved, and long may FUNK continue to inspire and connect!
